What is Vision Therapy?

Vision therapy is a highly effective in-office program that works to improve visual skills that are processed by the brain.

These skills are essential for reading, academics, athletics, and work. At Midtown Vision Development Center, we tailor each program to suit an individual’s needs and goals. We use a multi-sensory approach beyond just working on the eyes, including body movements, auditory cues, and cognitive demands.

Learn about your visual skills

Beyond 20/20 vision, there are four areas of visual function necessary for clear, comfortable, and efficient vision:

  • Binocular vision skills (eye teaming) - using your eyes together to point in the same spot in order to see single vision instead of seeing double

  • Oculomotor skills (eye tracking) - making quick, efficient eye jumps (saccades) and smooth movements (pursuits)

  • Accommodation skills (eye focusing) - focusing your vision at various distances with instant clarity and maintaining clear vision for long periods of time

  • Visual perceptual skills - organizing and interpreting visual information

Having trouble in any of these skills can cause challenges in school or work for children and adults of any age.

Identifying Visual Problems

These problems involve the visual skills and can be the reason why a child is unable to enjoy reading or why an adult is experiencing fatigue with long-term computer use.

Here are some signs to look out for:

  • Blurry vision or double vision when reading or even at distance

  • Short attention span

  • Headaches or eyestrain when reading

  • Slow reading speed

  • Loss of place when reading or the need to use a finger to track

  • Being fidgety or restless with reading

  • Holding reading material very close

  • Poor reading comprehension

  • Eye covering, head tilting, or excessive blinking when focusing on a target

  • Poor eye-hand coordination
